How is Planning an 80th Birthday Party

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from Restaurant Week Nyc.

Make sure that you involve the guest of honor in the planning process. If you have lived to be 80 years old, you know what you like. My Aunt Millie wanted a large party with all of her friends and house members. She selected her favorite Italian bistro as the location for the event. My grandmother, on the other hand, told us that her idea of a excellent party would be to go to her son's house and have just the immediate house celebrate. To my grandmother, a large, blow out party would be overwhelming.

Find out what is most foremost to the celebrant. For some it may mean having an out of town relative attend. Others may be focused on the menu and flowers. My Aunt Millie categorically wanted to wear a corsage and have all of her children wear one as well, so every person would recognize them. Ask open ended questions such as these to get to what categorically matters to the person being celebrated:
Describe your ideal party. Who would attend? What would we eat? What would be served? Would there be activities, music, or entertainment?

You don't have to involve the celebrant in all of the details, just the ones that are viewed as important. Once you have gathered all of the data about the desired guest list and location, your work will begin.

Invitations. Be sure to send written invitations, as many of the foremost guests may or many not check their email regularly, or may not use email at all. Consist of the following on the invitation:

Date. List the day of the week as well as the actual date. Time. Let habitancy know the start time as well as the end time, if it is not open ended. Location. Consist of the address and directions. Meal. Be sure guests know what type of meal you are serving (brunch, lunch or dinner). You may also settle to have a party with hor d'oeuvres only Gifts. Find out if the guest of honor would like any type of extra gift. At one 80th birthday party, all guests were asked to write a paragraph about their fondest memory with the celebrant. Rsvp. Consist of a phone whole and email address for guest to use when responding.

Invitations do not have to be expensive. There are so many fun bordered paper at office furnish stores, you can generate your own very easily.

Once habitancy have responded to your invitations, give a count to the person or factory hosting the party. Dispose for any type of audio optic needs. If there will be speeches, have a microphone and speaker set up.

Entertainment or Activities: Make sure you take this into list when planning a party. I attended an 80th birthday party where the host created a PowerPoint presentation of old and current photos of the celebrant. At another they posted the photos on poster board and hung them for the party. If the party is not too large you can also guests to share their favorite memory of the celebrant.

And as a 'after the party' gift to the guest of honors, make sure that you take lots of pictures at the party - especially of them with their many friends and house members. Then put the pictures in an album and present it to them. They will be so appreciative of this thoughtful gesture.

Do You Know How To Make The Right Decision?

--Restaurant Week Ny of Do You Know How To Make The Right Decision?--

his comment is here Do You Know How To Make The Right Decision?

Making decisions is part of contemporary life, and each day we make hundreds of simple decisions, a handful of prominent decision, and occasionally, a heavy decision. The problem is often in knowing the right or best thing to do, and so many of us do not know how to set about manufacture the right decision.

Do You Know How To Make The Right Decision?

Take Care with Your Decisions

You may be a student, and on whim resolve for or against lasting your studies; slight do you realise that a simple decision taken on a sunny afternoon on the playing fields of youth can resolve whether you get a promotion and salary raise on the battlefields of adult life, some 15-years later.

You may be ten years into your career, and find you are overlooked for a plum job in a new division; you get drunk that night and resolve whether to remain in that occupation or seek a new challenge with someone else company. You may be an athlete or budding sports personality as a youth, and at your first setback, or when the training starts to bite hard, you wonder whether to quit.

The one thing you do not realise at that time, and so do not take it into consideration, is that the waves from your decision will continue to spread out and touch lives, for the rest of time. If Fidel Castro had realised his athletic ambition to play for the New York Yankees, the country of Cuba would have experienced a dissimilar development this past 50-years. If Adolf Hitler had continued his occupation as a house painter, today, the whole world would be a dissimilar place.

Wrong Decisions become 'If Only'

When you make a decision that you later regret, it can become an 'if only' that will stick in your mind forever. This is not a good thing, and it is not necessary, because the alternative outcome may not have been at all the fantastic perceive you imagine.

You gave up ballet lessons or ice-skating and now, every time you watch it on television the 'if only' thoughts creep into your mind. Soon, these thoughts can become an obsession, because if you let them continue they can grow out of control. You can become bitter and morose as you worry about the life and occupation you never had, because of a decision made many years ago.

What you have to think about are the good things on the other side of the equilibrium sheet, all the happiness you have enjoyed because of the decision you made. Your partner in life, your house, career, and your family; these are gift today because of your earlier decisions.

So what if your horse does came second, you are only one whole out in the lottery, and the man you select to live with is not the 'dream-boat' you first imagined. Get real, and get with it, because nothing and nobody is ideal. Furthermore, if you watch Tv or read the magazines and Internet stories, the vast majority of big-money winners find their lives are ruined. Moreover, the majority of population who separation on a whim, or look for a younger or richer partner, mostly end up reasoning 'if only', because they learn the 'grass is not greener' on the other side.

Is There a Bad Decision?

The retort is an emphatic "Yes!" There is only one bad decision, and that is indecision. Many population suffer the inability to reach a decision; they procrastinate, and often let the current situation drift along for years while they ponder.

You must become decisive, when it is important to make a decision: in both small and great matters, because commonly indecision is a sign of the weak. When confronted with the supper menu in restaurant, your partner will not be impressed if you cannot resolve what you want to eat and drink.

Many population say that the only wrong decision is no decision; so when you weigh up in your mind the pros and cons of a situation, do not hesitate, but make your selection boldly and confidently. However, do not make a hasty decision that you may later regret.

A hasty decision is not necessarily a quick decision, but one made without assessing all the factors. Make sure that you know all that is important to know, and then make your decision based upon the facts and the corollary they will have in the future.

How to Make a Decision

You must make decisions throughout every day; but with many of them, you can make an automated response. When somebody asks you if you want a cup of tea or coffee, you do not have to ponder the question before manufacture your decision.

When it comes to manufacture a buy of that invaluable piece of software, eBook, or new lipstick from Paris, you have to weigh up all the factors in your mind; sometimes you have to do this very quickly, or you can miss an opportunity. On the equilibrium sheet, you place such things as the financial cost, the time it will consume, the potential of the product, the reputation of the supplier, the benefits it will provide, the life of the product, and its long-term effects.

You put the plus points on the right-hand side and the negative ones to the left, and try to score them. Budget of the points can be made in varied ways, and possibly the best is to make them a percentage. The cost of an item can be a ration of your weekly expendable income, and if it is something that is going to consume 50% of your free time that week, you put that on the left-hand side. Similarly, where some software is going to save you time, you can work out its ration and add that to the right-hand column.

This is a time-consuming exercise that can only give you a mathematical answer, but the imagine for doing it is that it makes think about each factor and its real worth in your life. Very often, you will realise that your desire for a single stock is just that - a desire for something new - and it will soon end up in the storage cupboard, which is already full.

Sometimes, however, there are benefits to you and your family that cannot be accurately measured; and a mountain holiday in a rented recreational car that brings your family together can be invaluable, and has to be considered.

Do You Listen to Your Heart or Your Head?

The problem with seeing at a decision logically is that it ignores what your heart is telling you, and you can well make the wrong choice. You can spend a long time considering all the facts logically and reaching an adult, balanced decision; however, sometimes you dispose the facts to suit the decision your heart wished you to take.

All the facts point towards selling your old, roomy family home that requires a lot of repairs and maintenance for that spacious home in a new development; but your heart is telling you that you love the house, location, and neighbours, so you stay.

Your friends slowly move away, your roof leaks, the kids have too far to trip to school, and you get a letter from the council about the new highway that wants part of your backyard! Do not let your emotions sway you into manufacture a decision.

On the other hand, do not make a decision if something deep inside is telling you that it is wrong, because that is when you must listen. Your employer offers you a great new job in someone else town that means you and the whole family have to relocate; great, you must go for it, if all the other factors are okay. However, if you have that niggle inside that is telling you not to do it, then it is probably time to listen.

When it is time to make your next decision, make sure you have all the facts, look at the determined choice, and if your heart is not against you, go for it with power and confidence!

Chapter I

Corn Sugar and Blood And the Rise and Fall of the Cleveland Mafia

"Big Ange" and the Death of the Cleveland Mafia

In 1983, Angelo Lonardo, 72, one-time Cleveland Mafia boss, turned government informant. He shocked family, friends, law obligation officers and particularly, criminal company with his decision which was made after being sentenced to life plus 103 years for drug and racketeering convictions. The sentence came after a monumental investigation by local, state and federal agencies had all but wiped out the Cleveland Mafia.

"Big Ange" as he was called, was the highest ranking mafioso to defect. He testified in 1985 at the Las Vegas casino "skimming" trials in Kansas City and in 1986 at the New York Mafia "ruling commission" trials. Many of the nation's biggest mob leaders were convicted as a effect of these trials.

During his testimony, Lonardo told how at age 18, he avenged his father's murder by killing the man believed to be responsible. He additional testified that after that murder, he was responsible for the killings of any of the Porrello brothers, business rivals of his father during Prohibition.

Chapter Ii

Birth of the Cleveland Mafia

During the late eighteen hundreds, the four Lonardo brothers and seven Porrello brothers were boyhood friends and fellow sulphur mine workers in their hometown of Licata, Sicily. They came to America in the early nineteen hundreds and at last placed in the Woodland district of Cleveland. They remained close friends. any of the Porrello and Lonardo brothers worked together in small businesses.

Lonardo clan leader "Big Joe" became a successful businessman and society leader in the lower Woodland Avenue area. during Prohibition, he became successful as a dealer in corn sugar which was used by bootleggers to make corn liquor. "Big Joe" provided stills and raw materials to the poor Italian district residents. They would make the booze and "Big Joe" would buy it back giving them a commission. He was respected and feared as a "padrone" or godfather. "Big Joe" became the leader of a grand and vicious gang and was known as the corn sugar "baron." Joe Porrello was one of his corporals.

Chapter Iii

The First Bloody Corner

With the advent of Prohibition, Cleveland, like other big cities, experienced a wave of bootleg-related murders. The murders of Louis Rosen, Salvatore Vella, August Rini and any others produced the same suspects, but no indictments. These suspects were members of the Lonardo gang. any of the murders occurred at the angle of E. 25th and Woodland Ave. This intersection became known as the "bloody corner."

By this time, Joe Porrello had left the employ of the Lonardos to start his own sugar wholesaling business.
Porrello and his six brothers pooled their money and at last became successful corn sugar dealers headquartered in the upper Woodland Avenue area around E. 110th Street.

With small competitors, sugar dealers and bootleggers, mysteriously dying violent deaths, the Lonardos' business flourished as they gained a near monopoly on the corn sugar business. Their main competitors were their old friends the Porrellos.

Raymond Porrello, youngest of his brothers was arrested by undercover federal agents for arranging a sale of 100 gallons of whiskey at the Porrello-owned barbershop at E. 110th and Woodland. He was sentenced to the Dayton, Oh. Workhouse.

The Porrello brothers paid the influential "Big Joe" Lonardo ,000 to get Raymond out of prison. "Big Joe"
failed in his attempt but never returned the ,000.

Meanwhile, Ernest Yorkell and Jack Brownstein, small-time self-proclaimed "tough guys" from Philadelphia arrived in Cleveland. Yorkell and Brownstein were shakedown artists, and their intended victims were Cleveland bootleggers, who got a chuckle out of how the two felt it vital to explicate that they were tough. Real tough guys didn't need to tell habitancy that they were tough. After providing Cleveland gangsters with a laugh, Yorkell and Brownstein were taken on a "one-way ride."

Chapter Iv

Corn Sugar and Blood

"Big Joe" Lonardo in 1926, now at the height of his wealth and power left for Sicily to visit his mum and
relatives. He left his closest brother and business partner John in charge.

During "Big Joe's" six-month absence, he lost much of his ,000 a week profits to the Porrellos who took advantage of John Lonardo's lack of business skills and the assistance of a disgruntled Lonardo employee. "Big Joe" returned and business talks in the middle of the Porrellos and Lonardos began.
They "urged" the Porrellos to return their lost clientele.

On Oct. 13th, 1927 "Big Joe" and John Lonardo went to the Porrello barbershop to play cards and talk business with Angelo Porrello as they had been doing for the past week. As the Lonardos entered the rear room of the shop, two gunmen opened fire. Angelo Porrello ducked under a table.

Cleveland's underworld lost its' first boss as "Big Joe" went down with three bullets in his head. John Lonardo was shot in the chest and groin but drew his gun and managed to pursue the attackers through the barbershop. He dropped his gun in the shop but continued chasing the gunmen into the road where one of them turned, and out of bullets, struck Lonardo in the head any times with the butt of his gun. John fell unconscious and bled to death.

The Porrello brothers were arrested. Angelo was expensed with the Lonardo brothers' murders. The charges were later dropped for lack of evidence. Joe Porrello succeeded the Lonardos as corn sugar "baron" and later appointed himself "capo" of the Cleveland Mafia.

Chapter V

The Cleveland Meeting

The trail of bootleg blood continued to flow with numerous murders stemming from the Porrello-Lonardo conflict.

Lawrence Lupo, a old Lonardo bodyguard was killed after he let it be known that he wanted to take over the Lonardos' corn sugar business.

Anthony Caruso, a butcher who saw the Lonardos' killers flee was shot and killed. It was believed that he knew the identities of the gunmen and was going to divulge them to police.

On Dec. 5th, 1928, Joe Porrello and his lieutenant and bodyguard Sam Tilocco hosted the first known major meeting of the Mafia at Cleveland's Hotel Statler. Many major Mafia leaders from Chicago to New York to Florida were invited. The meeting was raided before it nothing else but began.

Joe Profaci, leader of a Brooklyn, N.Y. Mafia family was the most customary of the gangsters arrested. Within a few hours, to the astonishment of police and court officials, Joe Porrello gathered thirty family members and friends who put up their houses as collateral for the gangsters' bonds. Profaci was bailed out personally by Porrello. A great controversy over the validity of the bonds followed.

Several theories have been given as to why the meeting was called. First, it was plan that the gangsters, local presidents of the Unione Siciliane, an immigrant aid society infiltrated by the Mafia, were there to elect a new national president. Their old president, Frankie Yale had been recently killed by order of Chicago's notorious Al Capone. Second, it was believed that the meeting may have been called
to originate the very lucrative corn sugar industry. It was also said that the men were there to "confirm" Joe Porrello as "capo" of Cleveland.

Capone, a non-Sicilian was reported to be in Cleveland for the meeting. He left soon after his advent at the
advice of company who said that the Sicilians did not want him there.

Chapter Vi

The Second Bloody Corner

As Joe Porrello's power and wealth grew, heirs and close company to the Lonardo brothers grew hot for revenge.

Angelo Lonardo, "Big Joe's" 18-year-old son along with his mum and his cousin, drove to the angle of E. 110th and Woodland, the Porrello stronghold. There Angelo sent word that his mum wanted to speak to Salvatore "Black Sam" Todaro. Todaro, now a Porrello lieutenant, had worked for Angelo's father and was believed to be responsible for his murder. In later years it was believed that he was nothing else but one of the gunmen.

As Todaro approached to speak with Mrs. Lonardo whom he respected, Angelo pulled out a gun and emptied it into "Black Sam's stocky frame. Todaro crumpled to the sidewalk and died.

Angelo and his cousin disappeared for any months reportedly being hid in Chicago courtesy of Lonardo friend Al Capone. Later it was believed that Angelo spent time in California with his uncle Dominick, fourth Lonardo brother who fled west when indicted for a payroll robbery murder in 1921.

Eventually Angelo and his cousin were arrested and expensed with "Black Sam's" murder. For the first time in Cleveland's bootleg murder history justice was served as both young men were convicted and sentenced to life. Justice although served would be shortlived as they would be released only a year and a half later after winning a new trial.

Chapter Vii

Rise of the Mayfield Road Mob

On October 20th, 1929, Frank Lonardo, brother to "Big Joe" and John was shot to death while playing cards. Two theories were given for his death; that it was in revenge for the murder of "Black Sam" Todaro and, that he was killed for not paying gambling debts. Mrs. Frank Lonardo, when told of
her husband's murder screamed, "I'll get them. I'll get them myself if I have to kill a whole regiment!"

By 1929, exiguous Italy crime boss Frank Milano had risen to power as leader of his own gang, "The Mayfield Road Mob." Milano's group was made up in part of remnants of the Lonardo gang and was also linked with the grand "Cleveland Syndicate," Morrie Kleinman, Moe Dalitz, Sam Tucker and Louis Rothkopf. The Cleveland Syndicate was responsible for most of the Canadian booze imported via Lake Erie. In later years they got into the casino business. One of the their largest and most profitable enterprises was construction of the Desert Inn Hotel/Casino in Las Vegas. Dalitz would come to be known as the "Godfather of Las Vegas."

Joe Porrello admired Milano's political organization, the East End Bi-Partisan Political Club and, looking the value in such influence, wanted to ally himself with the group. Milano refused. Later, Porrello was reported to have affiliated himself with the newly formed 21st District Republican Club. He hoped to originate the Woodland Avenue voters as Milano was doing on Mayfield road.

Chapter Viii

More Corn Sugar and Blood

By 1930, Milano had grown quite powerful. He had gone so far as to inquire a piece of the lucrative Porrello corn sugar business. On July 5th, 1930, Porrello received a phonecall from Milano who had requested a consulation at his Venetian bistro on Mayfield Road. Sam Tilocco and Joe Porrello's brother Raymond urged him not to go.

At about 2:00 p.m., Joe Porrello and Sam Tilocco arrived at Milano's bistro and speakeasy. Porrello, Tilocco, and Frank Milano sat down in the bistro and discussed business. any of Milano's henchmen sat nearby. The atmosphere was tense as Porrello refused to accede to Milano's demands.

Porrello reached into his pocket for his watch to check the time. Two of Milano's men, perhaps believing that Porrello was reaching for his gun opened fire. Porrello died at once woth three bullets in his head Simultaneously, a third member of Milano's gang fired at Tilocco who was struck three times but managed to stagger out the door toward his new Cadillac. He fell to the ground as the gunmen pursued him, finishing him off with other six bullets.

Frank Milano and any of his bistro employees were arrested but only expensed with being suspicious persons. The gunmen were never nothing else but identified. Only one scrutinize was present in the saloon when the shooting started. He was Frank Joiner, a slot motor distributor whose only testimony was that he "thought" he saw Frank Milano in the bistro during the murders.

Cleveland's aggressive and outspoken safety Director Edwin Barry, frustrated by the continually rising estimate of bootleg murders, ordered all known sugar warehouses to be padlocked. He ordered a policeman to be detailed at each one to make sure that no sugar was brought in or removed.

Meanwhile, the six Porrello brothers donned black silk shirts and ties and buried their most successful brother. The showy duplicate gangster funeral was one the largest Cleveland had ever seen. Two bands and thirty-three cars overloaded with flowers led the procession of the slain don and his bodyguard. Over two hundred fifty automobiles containing family and friends followed. Thousands of mourners and spirited on-lookers lined the sidewalks.

Cleveland's underworld was tense with rumors of imminent warfare. Porrello brother Vincente-James spoke openly of wiping out everybody responsible for his brother's murder.

Three weeks after his brother's murder, Jim Porrello still wore a black shirt as he entered the I & A grocery and meat market at E. 110th road and Woodland. As he picked out lamb chops at the meat counter, a Ford touring car, its' curtains tightly drawn, cruised gradually past the store. A merge of shotguns poked out and two lasts of buckshot were fired, one through the front window of the store and one through the front screen door.

The amateur gunmen got lucky. Two pellets found the back of Porrello's head and entered his brain. He was rushed to the hospital.

Chapter Ix

"I think maybe they'll kill all us Porrellos"

"I think maybe they'll kill all us Porrellos. I think maybe they will kill all of us except Rosario. They can't
kill him - he's in jail." Thus Ottavio Porrello grimly but calmly thinkable, the probable fate of he and his brothers as he waited face Jim's hospital room. Jim Porrello died at 5:55 p.m.

Two local petty gangsters were arrested and expensed with murder. One was discharged by directed verdict and the other was acquitted. Like roughly all of Cleveland's bootleg linked murders, the killers never saw justice.

About this time, it was rumored that the Porrello brothers were marked for extermination. The surviving
brothers went into hiding. Raymond, known for his cocky attitude and hot temper spoke like his brother James did of seeking revenge. Raymond was smarter though, he took active measures to safe himself.

On August 15th, 1930, three weeks after James Porrello's murder, Raymond Porrello's house was leveled in a violent explosion. He was not home at the time since he had taken his family and abandoned his home in anticipation of the attack.

Four days later Frank Alessi, a scrutinize to the murder of "Big Joe" Lonardo's brother Frank, was gunned down. From his death bed, he identified Frank Brancato as his assailant. Brancato was known in general as a Lonardo supporter and presuppose in any murders. Brancato was acquitted of Alessi's murder.

Chapter X

In March of 1931, Rosario Porrello was paroled from Ohio's London Prison Farm where he had served one year for carrying a gun in his car.

In mid-1931, National Mafia "capo di tutti capi" (boss of all bosses) Salvatore Maranzano was killed. His murder set in appeal the formation of the first Mafia National Ruling Commission created to stop the numerous murders resulting from conflicts in the middle of and within Mafia families and to promote application of modern business practices to crime.

Charles "Lucky" Luciano was the main developer of the commission and was named chairman. Also named to the commission were Al Capone of Chicago, Joe Profaci of Brooklyn and Frank Milano of Cleveland.

In Dec. Of 1931, Angelo Lonardo and his cousin Dominic Suspirato were released from prison after being acquitted of "Black Sam" Todaro's murder during a second trial. Because he had avenged his father's death and (for the most part) gotten away with it, he became a respected member of Frank Milano's Mayfield Road Mob.

The thirst for revenge had not been satisfied for members of the Lonardo family. It was commonly believed
that "Black Sam" Todaro instigated and perhaps took part in the murders of "Big Joe" and John Lonardo. However it was believed by members of the Lonardo family that the remaining Porrello brothers, particularly the volatile John and Raymond and eldest brother Rosario still posed a threat because of
the murders of Joe and James Porrello.

On Feb. 25th, 1932 Raymond Porrello, his brother Rosario and their bodyguard Dominic Gulino (known also by any aliases) were playing cards near E. 110th and Woodland Avenue. The front door burst open and in a hail of bullets the Porrello brothers, their bodyguard and a bystander went down. The Porrellos died at the scene. Gulino died a merge of hours later. The bystander at last recovered from his
wounds.

Several hours after the murders, Frank Brancato, with a bullet in his stomach, dragged himself into St. John's hospital on Cleveland's west side. He claimed he was shot in a road fight on the west side. A few days later, tests on the bullet taken from Brancato revealed that it came from a gun found at the Porrello brothers murder scene. Although never convicted of whether of the murders, Brancato was convicted of perjury for lying to a Grand Jury about his whereabouts during the murder. He served four years after a one to ten year sentence was commuted by Governor Martin L. Davey.

In 1933, Prohibition was repealed. The bootleg murders mostly stopped as organized crime moved into other enterprises. Angelo Lonardo continued his crime occupation as a respected member of the Cleveland family at last rising through the ranks to run the northeast Ohio rackets in 1980.

In early 1933, in a sequel to the tragedy of the large Porrello family, Rosario's son Angelo, 21, was killed in a fight over a pool game in Buffalo. It was said that he and his Uncle John were there trying to muscle in on the corn liquor business.

Do you know about - Presenting - Glenn Cochrane - Media Personality, Author and specialist Fundraiser

Restaurant Week Nyc! Again, for I know. Ready to share new things that are useful. You and your friends.

When I recently talked to some habitancy about my Celebrate Toronto project, which starts with an article & interview series and a photo exhibition about the Beach, about 4 or 5 dissimilar habitancy concurred that one someone should not be missed: Glenn Cochrane.

What I said. It is not outcome that the real about Restaurant Week Nyc. You look at this article for information about that need to know is Restaurant Week Nyc.

How is Presenting - Glenn Cochrane - Media Personality, Author and specialist Fundraiser

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from Restaurant Week Nyc.

When I approached Glenn, the former Cfto news personality cordial invited me into his gorgeous condominium high above Queen street and gave me a chance to sit down with a real veteran of Toronto's Beach neighbourhood. After explaining my mission to Glenn, he was very forthcoming welcoming and willing to share his life's experiences and his neighbourhood's stories with me.

He first clarified that the true Beach area is bounded by Kingston Road and Lake Ontario, as well as Woodbine Avenue and Victoria Park Avenues on the west and east sides respectively. Particularly due to the addition demand for real estate in this favorite area, the term "Beach(es)" has wide in new years to include other adjoining areas. Beach residents are quick to point out that this is a real estate term.

Glenn himself was born in Hamilton and came to Toronto in 1964. He worked at Canadian Press and moved to the Cfto Television station where he started out as a writer. His single talent lay in light writing, and Glenn was often assigned to write the end remarks for Ken Cavanagh, the anchorman at the time, who liked to close his newscasts with a light comment.

His vocation in front of the camera started accidentally when an assignment editor sent Glenn out with a cameraman to cover a local story as the quarterly television reporter was not available. Glenn's talent in front of the camera got noticed and he received rave reviews from the audience and his peers. From that point forward he had a weekly highlight in the news called "Our Man Friday" and later got a daily spot in the newscast, focusing on human interest stories.

Glenn fondly recalls this time as he was given free reign to interview habitancy as he wished and to cover stories that he found interesting. One story that comes to his mind was about a life-long farm worker, an individual without a lot of formal education, but a lot of practical talent. This gentleman would turn disused farm machinery and implements into creatively re-functioned objects. Glenn mentioned a big tractor wheel that was adequate with flower pots that could be watered by turning the wheel.

For a practical example of this gentleman's creative handiwork Glenn took me out onto his balcony and showed me a small round garden table, handrafted by this individual from a round heating grate while the feet were made from compel spikes. Glenn fondly recalls this someone as a quiet very humble individual.

Glenn and Jean Cochrane have been living in the Beach for roughly 40 years now. As a matter of fact, Jean was the one who discovered the neighbourhood when she did an interview with a local resident as the woman's editor for Canadian Press. Right around 1970 the Cochranes moved into their first owned home on Beech Avenue.

At that time, Glenn adds, the Beach was literally a forgotten neighbourhood. During the 1970s the Beach had an aging habitancy and the area was not nearly as pristine as it is today. Glenn explained that the boardwalk was settled about half an inch below the lake, and routinely in the spring, shards of ice would lift up the boards and big gaping holes would appear in this treasured waterfront promenade, normally requiring high-priced repairs.

When Glenn and Jean first moved here, most of the industrial action on Queen street was concentrated between Woodbine and Lee Avenue. As a matter of fact, Kingston Road supplementary north was victorious much more than Queen Street. Agreeing to Glenn's research for the book he is currently working on (his new book will be about the Beach), Queen street was not a particularly lively destination in the 1930s and 1940s as it was mostly characterized by gas stations and reduction stores. These so-called "junk stores" were oftentimes visited by the police, until their owners decided to call them "antique stores". With the name change, the image of these stores changed as well and the frequent police visits stopped.

Glenn literally due the revival of this neighbourhood to the rebuilding of the Balmy Beach School. The school was old and cramped and in a public hearing with the local residents, an specialist demographer proclaimed that the school would need to be rebuilt in order to attract young families. And so it happened, the school got rebuilt and the entire Beach neighbourhood became lively to families with young children. Large houses that were originally built in the 1920s for large families were filled with life again.

Referring to the transitions in his neighbourhood, Glenn mentioned that the Beach has never literally been known as a original destination for fashion shopping although there are some established retailers selling men's and women's fashions. He indicated that the demolition of the race track in the early 1990s had a big influence on the neighbourhood. While the race track was still in existence, local residents experienced requisite problems with race track customers parking in their driveways and front lawns. A shortage of parking is a tasteless refrain in the Beach.

That does not forestall the neighbourhood from throwing major parties throughout the procedure of the year. The most customary event is the Beaches Jazz Festival held over four consecutive days every summer. Although a satisfaction to the revelers and music fans that descend on Queen street East every year, the residents were affected by the increased traffic, congestion and crowds at that time. Many of these concerns have now been addressed in collaboration with Sandra Bussin, the City Councillor for the Beach area. action commonly shuts down at 11 pm so local residents can still get a good night's sleep while visitors are able to enjoy a great street party. Compromise solutions have helped to address the needs of residents and visitors alike.

Glenn's eyes twinkle when he tells me that right in front of his condo a percussion band quarterly sets up During the Jazz Festival and their repeated drumming sessions can get to you after a while. Some local Beach residents will literally make a point to get out of town During the festival for a weekend of rest and relaxation in the country. Glenn and his wife Jean love the Jazz Festival, the only downside is that literally very little jazz music is played During the festival. Glenn explains that today there are very few New Orleans-style jazz bands left, and the ones that do exist are very high-priced to bring to the city. One group of oldtimer jazz musicians still participates every year at the angle of Lee and Queen, but due to their advanced age, jazz fans need to contend with frequent breaks in their agenda so these jazz veterans can catch some rest and recharge their batteries.

Particularly since his retirement, Glenn Cochrane has become even more complex in local society work. One of his early introductions to charity work was when he purchased a wooden hand-carved rocking horse from a local artist, sold draw tickets for the horse and raised 0 for the Beaches Library, a local society convention that the entire Beach neighbourhood is very proud of.

Centre 55, a local society centre and public services agency, is an additional one one of Glenn's endeavours: he is the Chairman the Board of Centre 55 and claims that he is not a dominant form in the running of this leading organization. He defers all the reputation for the work of this convention to Bob Murdoch, the executive director, who in Glenn's words, doesn't like to be praised. Gene Domagala, who I recently interviewed, and Glenn Cochrane were both voted "Citizens of the Year" in consecutive years (2001 and 2002) and Glenn says that they are very good friends. Glenn normally volunteers as the specialist of ceremony for the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and he also donates his time to the Jazzfest Winegarden Fundraiser and many other local causes.

One of Glenn's leading causes is architectural preservation, and along with Gene Domagala they roughly singlehandedly saved the noted Leuty Lifesaving station from sure destruction. Glenn explains that when the city no longer deems a building beneficial they confer it with "benign neglect" which sometimes results in the destruction of a historic building. In this case a committee of involved citizens led by Glenn Cochrane and Gene Domagala started a major fundraising drive to save the Leuty Lifesaving Station. The campaign was called "Sos" ("Save Our Station") and straight through the sale of mugs, t-shirts ("by the truck load", as Glenn says) and a wide collection of extra events, the group raised tens of thousands of dollars and the Leuty Lifesaving station was saved. He even organized some harp concerts as fundraisers. The historic buildings was thoroughly saved in all its glory; the only distinction to the original version was the premise of a female turn room, reflecting the fact that times had changed and that lifesaving today was no longer an exclusively male domain.

Another fundraising event complex a replica of the Leuty Lifesaving Station: slightly bigger than a garden shed, the "Little Leuty" would be given away in a draw to the lucky winner, and the funds raised went to leading local causes. A woman finally ended up winning the draw and the "Little Leuty" found a welcome spot in her backyard as a playhouse for your young daughter. Creative fundraising has long been one of Glenn Cochrane's strengths.

Community action kicked into high gear again when the Greenwood Racetrack lands were terminated in 1993, and demolition was set to start. Glenn and a group of involved citizens lobbied to turn the former race track area into parkland. Unfortunately, and possibly not surprising considering this was prime real estate, the lobbying endeavor failed, and the developments of new townhouses and condos on the former race track lands went ahead. However, the developers were open to the idea of integrating some space for the community, and Agreeing to Glenn, this sent an leading signal that Beach residents were not just going to be pushed around.

We discussed that residents of the Beach are very protective of their neighbhourhood and would like to keep it the way it is. Currently, the neighbourhood is experiencing some degree of controversy over a new proposed agenda called "Come in from the Cold" which would have homeless habitancy pend one night in a local church in the Beach. The agenda has already been operational in other parts of the city. A small group of local residents has expressed concern about this initiative, and there has been some negative media attention, accusing Beachers of having a positive Nimby (not-in-my-backyard) attitude.

On the other hand, a drop-in agenda that is open to homeless habitancy and assorted disadvantaged residents, has been successfully in execution for the last 6 years. Four churches in the Beach and the Beach Hebrew design each open their oors once a week from Monday to Friday, welcoming whatever off the street to a salutary and nutritious lunch that is run by local volunteers. Glenn's wife Jean normally volunteers for this agenda and helps put in order the meals for this drop-in program.

Glenn supplementary explains that it is a tasteless misconception that every person who lives in the Beach is wealthy. There are a requisite whole of low-income families in the Beach and a collection of society programs is dedicated to helping impoverished residents. One of the most leading ones is Centre 55's Christmas agenda which delivers food and toys to hundreds of low income families. Glenn's wife Jean has also been very complex in the Neighbourhood Link preserve Services, a ommunity club that helps seniors, newcomers, unemployed and homeless individuals and provides communication services to seniors. Many businesses in the Beach are ongoing supporters of Neighbourhood Link preserve Services - the spirit of charity and neighbourly help is alive and well in the Beach.

In addition, both Jean and Glenn Cochrane are extremely respected authors: Jean has penned a book about Kensington, one of Toronto's colourful neighbourhoods. In 2005 Glenn published his book "Glenn Cochrane - Tales of Toronto" which features a history of Toronto that won't be found in trip guides or city archives. Glenn is currently working on an additional one book, as yet untitled, which will be about the Beach and hopefully will be available later this year.

What I literally enjoyed about meeting Glenn Cochrane (and his wife Jean) was that they so graciously opened their home to me and so freely shared their stories and insights. Glenn and I share a passion about Toronto, our respective chosen home towns, and he most willingly shared his stories and experiences with me, an additional one writer who loves to celebrate Toronto and its neighbourhoods. When I mentioned that to Glenn he simply said "The more the merrier". Toronto can probably use as much preserve from as many dissimilar habitancy as it can get.

After our conversation we put on our heavy winter coats and headed out for a nice walk in the neighbourhood. We emerged on Queen street near Beech Avenue where Glen pointed out Quigley's Pub, a neighbourhood convention for good food and entertainment. A few doors down is Ed's Ice cream, a real success story in the Beach, and a place that I have visited many a time for a sinfully sweet treat. From there we walked south towards the Balmy Beach Club where Glenn invited me into this secret members club which, in his words, has the "best patio in all of Toronto". Talking about Toronto and our mutual observations, we then strolled supplementary east on the boardwalk, past the "Legend of the Lake" mural that adorns the south wall of the Balmy Beach Club.

Having reached the end of the Boardwalk we turned around and headed back west to the former location of the Scarbourough Beach Amusement Club that is marked today with a historic plaque. Just over the street are some older apartment buildings with a long history (including the Ramona and the Hubbard street Apartment Buildings, named after one of the first black City Councillors in Toronto's history). Up we strolled on Wineva Avenue, named after daughters Winnie and Eva of one of the Beaches early residents and then headed back east on Queen Street.

There is no doubt that Glenn Cochrane is an specialist on the Beach, and he gives a lot back to his favorite neighbourhood. I for one can't wait to read all the stories in his upcoming book on the Beach.

Starting with the news that rocked the world on Sunday, Beyonce announced on the VMA carpet that she and hubby Jay-Z are expecting! Lots of belling cradling and rubbing ensued during the show, and music's power couple seems to be over the moon about their upcoming addition. And that wasn't the only shock during the VMAs. Gaga took the stage to open the show in full character as Jo Calderone. We hear she took things really seriously too, even wearing a prosthetic penis to the event, and using the men's bathroom the whole night. Think anyone else could get away with that? Backstage at the show was equally as exciting with a fight breaking out between newcomer Kreayshawn and music mogul Rick Ross. His people aimed to put her in her place for the incessant dissing of Ross, and we have a feeling this feud is far from over. An unexpected show took place in New York this week, when Justin Timberlake surprised the diners at his restaurant Southern Hospitality with a live performance. Dark Mission (Part 1 of 3) Albuquerque, December 2007 projectcamelot.org The name of Richard Hoagland - a bearded Viking warrior, still standing after all these years - is inevitably etched in the minds of all those who have contemplated the possibility that all may not be the way we are led to believe on the Moon and Mars. Informed and opinionated, and proud to have been a steady thorn in NASA's side for over twenty years, Richard makes regular appearances as the Science Adviser on Coast to Coast AM - and has written two books, the most recent of which, Dark Mission, has climbed to near the top of the New York Times best seller list. We visited Richard at his Albuquerque home on two occasions. The first, in December 2006, generated the kind of spirited and wide-ranging restaurant conversation that really should have been captured on video. The second time, a year later, we channeled all our conversation on camera - three hours' worth - and then celebrated with the restaurant conversation afterwards. The three of us were delighted with what we had captured. Nick asked, of course liking that thought. "No, Lindsay is a little town in California" "Does Lindsay Lohan live there?" "Nick!" Joe shouted "She does not live there and now stop thinking about her naked, little kid in the room okay?" Dave shook his head "Dad, we don't want to live there, I go to college here in New York" "I know Kevin but don't you see what a big chance this is for me? I finally get a chance to open my own restaurant" "But dad... New York is soooo much better than that, I bet there is nothing to do at all!" We will find you an apartment, maybe with one of your friends, Nick, Joe and Frankie are moving with me!" "Dad! I am already 18, I don't wanna move" "You can move back to New York when you finished your Senior year okay?" "Can I move back here then too?" Nick asked. Joe and Nick both were in Senior Year.
